Tool 03 · Interview Prep
"Tell Me About Yourself" Builder
The single most common interview opener, and the single most fumbled answer. Use the Present–Past–Future arc and target 90 seconds.
The arc: Present (what you do now and why it matters) → Past (one or two relevant experiences that built your credibility) → Future (why this role, why this company, why now).
What most candidates get wrong
- Reciting the resume. The interviewer already has it. They want the through-line.
- Going back to college. Skip the college years unless you're a new grad. They don't care about your freshman internship at 32.
- Saying "I've always wanted to work in X." Sounds like a cover letter, not a person. Give a specific reason grounded in something you did last week.
- Not tying it to the role. If they can't hear the connection to the job in the last 20 seconds, they'll assume you mass-applied.
- Going over 2 minutes. Most interviewers mentally check out at 90 seconds. Practice cutting yourself off.
What this is good for
- Catching the "tell me everything" trap
- Forcing you to bridge to the role you're interviewing for
- Time-checking the answer against the 90s target
What this cannot do
- Adapt to non-standard interviewers who interrupt
- Tell you if your "why this company" is credible (you need to research the company)
