What NOT to put in a thank-you
- Don't restate your resume — they just lived through it.
- Don't correct or re-litigate an answer that didn't land.
- Don't pitch salary or start negotiating.
- Don't ask "what are my chances?" — that's an instant demotion in their eyes.
- Don't send a wall of text. Under 130 words is the target.
The timing rules nobody tells you
- Ends before 5pm: Send same day, ideally within 5 hours. Most NYC recruiters read email between 7-9pm.
- Ends after 5pm: Send the next morning before 9am. A late-night thank-you looks desperate.
- Multi-interviewer day: Send individual notes within 24 hours of the last interview, not the first.
- Panel or super-day: One short thank-you to the recruiter ("Thank you for organizing today") and one substantive one to the hiring manager.
What this is good for
- Forcing you to reference a specific moment, not just "thanks for the chat"
- Calibrating the timing based on when the interview ended
What this cannot do
- Guarantee the interviewer reads it (40-60% open rate is realistic)
- Overcome a weak interview — the note is a tiebreaker, not a save
